Reading Materials about the Eskimo Culture The Last Light Breaking and A Place Beyond - Finding Home in Arctic Alaska are excellent books which overview modern Eskimo life. The author is Nick Jans, a schoolteacher for 11 years in the village of Ambler, 200 miles from Kotzebue on the Kobuk River. For a somewhat older and more traditional description of the Eskimo lifestyle, the Alaska Geographic, The Kotzebue Basin is excellent. Authentic Alaska - Voices of Its Native Writers by Susan B. Andrews and John Creed (ISBN: O-8032-5933-6). A wonderful collection of 50 gritty, forthright narratives about late- twentieth-century life in Kotzebue area that explores a range of experiences and issues. |
